The interview

Low Geik Kiang , Malaysia

What is your name?

Low Geik Kiang

What is your profession?

Physiotherapist

How is the rehabilitation treatment of spine diseases managed in your country?

In Malaysia, normally, orthopaedic doctors will advise patients to go for physiotherapy treatment if surgical intervention is not indicated.

However, there are many other options, like traditional massage, traditional medicine, bone setting, or only medication.

Scoliosis: how is it treated?

In Malaysia, there are many conservative treatments or traditional treatments (traditional massage, bone setting, and acupuncture) for treating scoliosis.

Surgical management is also popular in Malaysia.  However, evidence-based scoliosis-specific exercises and bracing are still very weak.

I think less than 10 physiotherapists are doing it.

What would you like to improve on the clinical practices currently followed in your country?

I would like to introduce more about scoliosis-specific exercises to the community as well as to the practitioners.

I hope to increase scoliosis awareness in the community and early detection.

I hope we can get a better brace with affordable pricing in my country so that every scoliosis patient has a good, conservative treatment.

What do you think this course can give you, and how do you think you can apply this knowledge in your daily clinical practice?

I gained more knowledge about patient assessment techniques and evidence-based practices from this training.

I have more knowledge regarding braces, although I can't get them here.

I will relate everything like age, cobb angle, TRACE, risk factor, brace, and progression with time when treating my patients.

Besides that, the psychological part is also important in motivating patients.
