The interview
Morris Kahere, Zimbabwe
What is your name, and where do you come from?
I'm Morris Kahere and I am from Zimbabwe
What is your profession?
I am a Chiropractor
How is the rehabilitation treatment of spine diseases managed in your country?
There are only less than 10 chiropractors in the country and physiotherapists. Physiotherapists are dependent practitioners and solely rely on referrals from doctors. Most spinal deformity problems are managed surgically by the orthopaedics of the neurosurgeons.
Scoliosis: how is it treated?
Scoliosis is managed surgically by surgeons, and there are only a limited number of surgeons who deal with scoliosis. I doubt if those surgeons who manage scoliosis follow SOSORT guidelines. There is a need for this specialised service in Zimbabwe.
What aspects of actual clinical practice would you like to see improved in your country?
Non-surgical management of scoliosis and non-medicinal management of idiopathic spine related pain disorders
What do you believe you can learn from this course, and how can you use the new concepts in your regular clinical work?
I wish to gain a solid evidence based protocol for scoliosis management, including scoliosis specific exercises and brassing. I want to use this knowledge to help a lot of people avoid surgery or undergoing unnecessary surgical procedures that could otherwise have been prevented.
